Clayton's Late-Summer Reset: What's Opening on Wydown, What's on the Calendar, and How the Two Line Up

For five years the corner of Hanley and Wydown has been the block everyone in Clayton walks past without looking at. The Starbucks closed in 2021, a franchise revival fell through, and the storefront sat dark while the rest of the block kept its rhythm across the street at Wright's Tavern. That corner is the tell for what the rest of 2026 looks like here. Three of the most-discussed restaurant moves of the year are clustered inside a six-minute walk of each other, all inside the Wydown-to-Bemiston corridor, and the public calendar from Labor Day through mid-October is stacked with free events at Shaw Park and Oak Knoll. Three openings, one walkable corridor

The through-line for this year's restaurant news is that a small number of operators are doubling and tripling down on a few blocks residents already know.

Gigi's Cafe, 7645 Wydown Blvd. Matt McGuire, who runs Louie and Wright's Tavern, is taking over the long-empty Starbucks directly across from his steakhouse. The Plan Commission and Architectural Review Board approved the conditional-use permit in April. The concept is a daytime coffeehouse that turns into an Italian-style bar with pizza in the evenings, roughly 2,200 square feet, 45 seats inside plus a patio, opening at 7 a.m. McGuire told the commission he doesn't usually work Sundays but was open to reconsidering for the neighborhood's sake, which is the kind of concession a room full of Wydown residents notices.

Toast & Thyme, 231 S. Bemiston. Dan Powers, formerly of Boogaloo, opened this counter-service weekday café on the ground floor of the Bemiston Tower earlier in 2026, in the space that used to be Metro Java. The interior kept the previous 45-seat footprint with light updates. The Cubaniche sandwich from the old Boogaloo menu came with him.

Bemiston Cocktail & Social Club, 14 S. Bemiston. Originally opened in 2016 as Extra Brut, closed after the pandemic, and reopened in December 2024, the 60-seat bar rolled out expanded hours and a full sushi menu on July 8. It shares a kitchen with Louie's Wine Dive next door, and the sushi program is run by regional executive chef Drew Hoormann. Current hours are 6 to 11 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 6 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday.

Put a pin in the address on each: 7645 Wydown, 231 S. Bemiston, 14 S. Bemiston. That is not a food scene spread across a metro. That is a triangle you can walk in ten minutes.

What that cluster actually changes for a weeknight

The pattern under all three stories is worth stating plainly. McGuire's group is now going to occupy both sides of Wydown at Hanley. Louie's Wine Dive and its sister bar are both on Bemiston. The corridor is quietly reorganizing around two operators who already know how to fill a Tuesday.

For residents, that shifts the calculus on a few things.

The first is the "where do we go on a Wednesday" problem. Clayton's dining guide has always been strong on destination reservations and thinner on drop-in weeknights. A coffeehouse that turns into a pizza-and-cocktail room across from a steakhouse fills a specific gap: the after-work stop that doesn't require a plan. Bemiston Cocktail & Social Club's expanded midweek hours land in the same slot. Between the two, the corridor now has drop-in evening seating on nights it used to go quiet.

The second is the parking conversation, which came up in the Gigi's hearing and will keep coming up. Karen Fairbank, a resident who spoke at the commission meeting, said she was excited about the project but concerned about parking and delivery traffic. That is a preview of the friction any new opening on Wydown is going to run into, and it is worth watching as the fall progresses.

The third is the coffee question. Zensia Coffee Cafe on Maryland has anchored the small-batch, sit-and-linger end of the market. Gigi's will be a different animal, host-seated and reservation-friendly in the evening. The two are complements more than competitors, which is unusual for a market this dense.

The public calendar residents are actually using

The other half of a late-summer plan is what the city puts on for free. The programming from mid-August through mid-October is unusually dense this year, and most of it sits inside the same two-park footprint.

A few of those deserve a second look.

The Musical Nights series has been running since June 21 and closes September 27, so the August 23 date is one of the last four Sundays to catch it. Oak Knoll is a picnic-forward park, and the format is deliberately loose: bring a blanket, sit under the trees, listen for two hours.

The Clayton Jazz Festival on October 3 is the calendar event of the fall. Shaw Park is the natural home for it. If you live north of Forsyth or in the DeMun blocks, you can walk in.

Party in the Patch on October 16 is the family-oriented anchor for mid-October. It's a two-hour Friday evening at Shaw Park, which pairs well with dinner earlier on Bemiston or Maryland.

Building a real Saturday

Here is the argument for why the corridor and the calendar are actually one story. Pick October 3, the Jazz Festival Saturday.

Morning coffee at Toast & Thyme on Bemiston. Walk two blocks north on Bemiston, cross Maryland, and you are in the Maryland Avenue restaurant row, which the Clayton Restaurant Week list runs down block by block. Late lunch at Bar Italia or Half & Half territory near Maryland if you want a longer sit. Home to change. Back down to Shaw Park by 5 p.m. for the Jazz Festival. If the set ends and you still have energy, Bemiston Cocktail & Social Club opens the sushi menu at 6.

That itinerary uses zero car trips. The reason it works is that Clayton's core is small enough that the new places are additive rather than dispersive. Every opening this year has been inside the same half-mile.

The version for a Wednesday in late August looks different but rhymes. Musical Nights runs 5 to 7 at Oak Knoll. Walk over from a DeMun-adjacent address, catch the set, then head east for a late seat at Bemiston Cocktail & Social Club. If Gigi's is open by then, that is a different route, but the geometry is the same.

What to watch between now and the jazz festival

Two things are worth following.

The Gigi's timeline. The conditional-use permit passed the Plan Commission in April and was headed to the City Council. Construction and buildout on the old Starbucks shell will take time, and McGuire has been public about sorting out delivery logistics. Watch the block for signage.

The Sunday question. When commissioners asked McGuire about Sunday hours, he said he'd historically stayed closed and would consider it for the neighborhood. Whether Gigi's opens Sundays is a small detail with an outsized effect on how the Wydown corridor feels on a weekend morning.

Between the openings on Wydown and Bemiston and the public calendar at Shaw and Oak Knoll, there is a full late-summer and early-fall itinerary sitting inside a three-block walk. The only thing you need to do is decide which Saturday.
